Farmer Cadden visited usFarmer Cadden came to our classroom to talk to us. We had lots of questions for the farmer. The farmer answered our questions very well and we learned lots of things from him.
Farmer Cadden showed us some of the cow’s food. Cows eat silage, hay, nuts and crunch. The silage was very smelly. We also saw some of the medicine the farmer uses and a bottle for the baby calves. The farmer loves his job. He loves being outside and watching the calves grow up. It is great to work out in the fresh air. Being a farmer means that every day is different and always very, very interesting. Farmer Cadden works very hard. Looking after all the animals is hard work but fun. Growing crops is hard work too but great when you get to eat what you grow. Being a farmer is a great job. |
Doctor Rooney visited usOn Friday the 15th of March Doctor Rooney came to visit our class. We had lots of questions ready for Doctor Rooney. She answered our questions very well.
Doctor Rooney’s favourite thing about being a doctor is visiting older people in their homes. Her least favourite thing about being a doctor is giving people injections. But injections only sting for a minute and it is very important to get them. Doctor Rooney is a GP. She looks after everyone in her surgery. Doctor Rooney spent ten years studying to be a doctor. It was very interesting when Doctor Rooney passed her instruments around and explained what they are used for. We learned about how she uses her stethoscope, patella hammer, measuring tape, sphyg, peak flow meter and thermometer. We all took a turn to blow in the peak flow meter. We really enjoyed Doctor Rooney’s visit to our class. She gave us all lovely stickers. We learned a lot of new things. Being a doctor is a very important job. |
Our Art Work
We have been busy doing art.
Water
During the month of May we did lots of work on water. We know that water is very important for us, for plants, for animals and for the whole world. We need to look after our water. We need to keep our
water clean and try not to use too much.
In English we talked a lot about water. We talked about a poster of the seaside and learnt a new rhyme called The Washing Machine. Two of our stories had lots of water in them. Splash was about some children playing with water at the seaside. Pirate Pete and the Monster was about a pirate who thought a monster was an island! Ooooops! In Gaeilge we learned lots of new words, rhymes and songs about An Linn Snámha and An Trá.
In maths we did some measuring with water. We worked in groups to investigate how much water different sized containers could hold. We had great fun doing this. We also looked at which objects would float and which would sink. We guessed, investigated and recorded the answers.
In geography we talked about and made a list of all the different ways we use water and talked about how important water is for people. We made a list of animals that live in or near water. Animals
need water to drink, find food and wash. We made a list of all the different ways we can save water at home and in school and we visited the water butt at the back of the school.
We looked on the internet at a diagram of how water is used over and over again. When the clouds get very heavy the water in them falls to the ground. This is usually rain but it can sometimes be snow
or even hailstones. The water that falls to the ground flows into streams and rivers and goes back to the lakes and seas. Some water goes back up into the sky, especially when it is warm. We did a little experiment about this. On a sunny day we poured some water outside. When we went back to check on the water a couple of hours later it had disappeared! We know that it had gone back up into the sky. The big word for this is evaporation! And so when lots of water goes back up to the sky, the clouds are made. When the clouds get heavy again it rains and then we are back to the start again!
In history we talked about how people got their water before there were water taps in every house. We listened to a story about water and talked about what happened in the story – what happened first,
second and so on.
In science we did an experiment to see how much water is wasted if a tap is left dripping. We were very surprised to see how much water was wasted. In PE and SPHE we learnt about water safety in the
home, in the swimming pool, at the beach and when out and about.
We even learnt about water in music and art. We learnt a song Apusski Dusky about little sardines swimming in the ocean. We listened to two pieces of music from the story The Little Mermaid – Under The Sea and Part of your World. We talked about the music and coloured pictures of the music. We also learnt the song Jackie the Sailor and an Irish song Chuaigh Mé go dtí an Trá.
In art we talked about the different colours and things we might see in the ocean. We painted a background of yellow for the ocean floor and blue for the ocean. Then we did fingerprinting on paper
plates to make tropical fish. We stuck these on our background along with shells, noodles , brown rice and seaweed made from crepe paper. Our ocean pictures look really cool.
We also made a picture of a boat sailing on the ocean. Using blue and green crayons we made wavy lines on our paper. We then painted over this with blue paint to make a lovely background. We cut out
different shapes and positioned them to look like a sailing boat. We then added some glitter glue on our wavy lines.
We really enjoyed learning all about water in all our different subjects. We are going to try really hard to save water and keep it clean.
