Active School - Partnerships
Meet our Active School Committee. Members of our 6th class form our Active School Committee.
Our Active School Committee meet regularly to create new initiatives and discuss the best ways of making our school more active.
Our Active School Committee aim to ensure everybody in Scoil Mhuire Magherarney takes part in Physical Activity during the school day.
(Did you know it is recommended that children have at least 60 minutes of activity every day!)
Our Active Committee also want to ensure that everyone has fun while also getting more active!

Members of our wonderful Active School Committee!
Our Active School Slogan
Our Active School Committee held a competition at the beginning of the year in which each class in our school had to create their own Active School Slogan. We had some wonderful entries from the Junior Infants all the way to Sixth Class.
The slogans were collected and judged by our on-site playschool committee and they selected the slogan composed by Seomra Rang 1 & 2. The slogan is catchy and sums up our thinking about being an Active School!
Scoil Mhuire - Active Schools Abú
Active schools have lots of fun,
As we run in the sun.
Skipping, walking, jumping too,
All these things are good for you.
Fit and strong, working as a team,
An Active Flag is our dream!
Playground Leaders
Members of our Active School Committee take on the important role of being Scoil Mhuire Magherarney Playground Leaders. They organise, distribute and monitor our School Playground Equipment Boxes. Our Playground Leaders work with the younger end of the school showing them how to use the equipment, how to play as a team, how to be more active during yard time and how to have fun while also being active!
Our Playground Leaders encourage all children in school to use the Equipment Boxes and excellently explained all of the different equipment and how they can be used.
Our Playground Leaders also create Obstacle Courses and other fun games to ensure that everyone can be Active on yard and have fun learning new skills!
These are our Active School Playground Equipment Boxes.
Each box is rotated across yard areas so that each class level can use various types of equipment throughout the week.
Have a look below at some our of Playground Leaders in action!
Scoil Mhuire's Parents' Association supports
Active Schools Programme
We are very grateful to our Parents' Association who generously donated the purchasing of additional equipment that can be used at lunch time to get us all more active and moving. We particularly wanted to work on our skipping skills, athletics and throwing and catching.
Our Parents' Association also make sure that every year on Sports' Day we have a rest station where we get a selection of tasty fresh fruit. It is so yummy!
Active Lines
Volunteers from Fifth and Sixth Class help us to add some additional active challenges into our timetable each day. Just after our small break our entire school meet outside in the playground and line up class by class to do our Active Lines.
Each day we have two exercises to perfect. One of our teachers explains the exercises each day and we follow along carefully to ensure we are completing the exercises correctly.
Our super volunteers demonstrate the exercises for us and help us with the challenges.
We love adding this extra 10 minutes of activity into our day!
We always begin our Active Lines by repeating our Active School Slogan together.

What club's are you in?
Our Active School Committee visited all classes in the Scoil Mhuire to find out what kind of active activities we take part in outside of school. We really are an active bunch and we have a broad interest in lots of various active clubs, teams and activities.
Ciaran and Jamie Lee created a bar graph to display the results of the Active Committee Survey.
It is visible on our school's Active Notice Board.

Tennis with coach Deirdre
All pupils from Juniors to Sixth Class have taken to the courts for a four week block of tennis lessons with coach Deirdre from Dundalk Tennis Club.
Each class has enjoyed the challenges so far and are looking forward to perfecting our skills as the weeks progress.

Rang 1 & 2 began with some simple throwing and catching. They then looked at the forehand and backhand grip and keepie uppies! We have now progressed on to simple bounce-catch rallies with our friend while trying to hit the ball so that is makes a nice rainbow arch over the net. We love tennis!
Be Active ASAP After School Programme
May and June 2022
The Be Active ASAP aims to improve the physical activity patterns of primary school children by introducing them to a wide variety of activities in a fun, supportive, positive environment, fostering positive attitudes toward physical activity during children's crucial formative years.
First and Second Class are taking part in our Be Active ASAP After School Programme for the months of May and June. The boys and girls take part in an hour of extra physical activity after school in which they get the opportunity to try new sports, develop their skills and have fun with their friends while also being active.

Be Active After School Warm Up with Ms Fahy
Yoga with Claire Brides
We have been thoroughly enjoying working with our local yoga teacher Claire Brides as part of our P.E lessons for the month of May.
We have enjoyed stretching, making different poses and learning how to move in new ways while also using our imagination while having fun.
We are all ZEN when returning to class!

Monaghan Sports Partnership - Coach Francis
Our local Sports Coach from Monaghan Sports Partnership is working with us over a 4 week block of lessons based on Athletics and Volleyball. Francis is focusing on Athletics skills with Junior Infants up to Second Class and is introducing Volleyball to the older classes, 3rd to 6th.

Francis taught us all about the importance of stretching and building a strong core.
We also worked on our balance. We worked in teams making sure we supported our team mates from start to finish. Working together is great fun! |
This week we worked on moving our arms when running. We started by weaving in and out of the markers, collecting a cone matching our team colour which were at the end of our running lines. Then we repeated the activity but this time our team cones were all mixed up so we had to remember to be mindful of the movement of others around us. We are getting faster and faster!

|
When Francis visited us this week we practiced our sprinting through the cones but we also practised throwing to hit a target using an under-arm throw. It was harder than it looked!
Third and Fourth Class - Volleyball Sessions

Golf Taster Session with Golf Pro Rossmore Golf Club
Our Third to Sixth Class pupils were treated to some small group golf taster sessions from our local Rossmore Golf Pro John Mc Quaid.
The children learned about the various golf clubs, how to hold the club correctly and how to practise and perfect their golf swing.
The boys and girls really enjoyed learning about a new sport and we hope that some of the children will be "on par" to be future budding golf stars.
