Our class entered the Write a Book competition organised by Monaghan Education Centre recently. We had to create our very own books from scratch on any topic we chose. We had two very important jobs being the author and the illustrator.
We all had lots of exciting ideas. We planned our stories very carefully and made sure our characters were interesting. Next, we created our first draft of our story. Our teacher sat down with each of us to read through our stories and to decide what we needed to change for the second draft of our story.
We worked really hard to make our stories exciting. We used lots of ‘wow’ adjectives. When we were happy with our stories, we began to publish them. We wrote our stories on nice paper in our very best handwriting. There was a space on each page for an illustration. It was great fun! We made books about tractors, football matches, windy days and ice-cream vans!
We are really proud of our hard work!
Tonal Scales
We have been learning all about mixing colours and the different tones in each colour. We only used black, white and primary colour to create our tonal scales. The primary colours we used were red and blue. We first created a dark tonal scale for each colour. Our pages were divided into 8 equal sections. We painted our first section either red or blue. Then we mixed a little bit of black to our primary colour and painted the next section. We kept on adding more black each time. Our primary colour got much darker! Then we did the same thing for our next tonal scale but we added white instead of black. Our tonal scale became really light! Finally we used what we learned about adding black/white to a primary colour to create a tonal scale alien. Here are some of our paintings!
Our First Communion
Our First Communion
Our First Holy Communion took place on Saturday, May 18th. Our mass was in St Mary's Church, Magherarney and was celebrated by Cannon McGreevy. We all had to get up very early to get ready and we were really excited. Each of us had a piece to read and so we practiced it one more time before we went to the church. All our families and friends were there to see us receive Jesus, the Bread of Life for the first time. We presented Ms Ryan with some flowers to say thank you for all her hard work in preparing us for this special day. The children from third, fourth, fifth and sixth class sang in our choir, they sounded great and we gave Ms Payne flowers to say thank you for organising the choir. We had our class photograph taken in the church and we went back to our school where our Parents' Association had organised refreshments before we went home to celebrate with our families. We had a great day.
On Monday we got a lovely surprise, a yummy cake to celebrate that we had made our First Holy Communion. The choir also got a special cake for coming on Saturday and singing at our mass. The cake was delicious and we shared it with our friends in first class!
