Active School - Physical Activity
School Athletics 2022
For the last number of weeks pupils from Rang 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 agus 6 have been training at lunch time to try out for the school's athletics team. The boys and girls have worked on sprints 100m , long distance running 600 metre and 800 metre and also in teams, running relays.
We then had a competition to select the team as each school was only allowed a certain number of participants. We went to the Peace Link running track for the Athletics Meet and had a great night, bringing home some medals but most of all cheering Scoil Mhuire on.

#Feel Good Friday - Active Walkway Day
On Friday the 25th of March all classes took part in our Feel Good Friday Walkway Day Challenge. All of the boys and girls used our school walkway to promote 'Learning on the Move'. Each class engaged in various different cross curricular challenges in an active way. We showed that we can learn on the move and be active while practising skills from other subject areas. Have a look at some of our photos and videos below!
Junior and Senior Infants used our Walkway Route take part in a Fairy Trail. The children located the fairies at each point on our Walkway Route and completed a fairy's favourite exercise and worked together with their partners to draw the various fairies favourite shapes and colours on an orienteering chart.

Third and Fourth Class used our School Walkway in order to practise telling the time in analogue and digital. They also used the letters along the Walkway to create short sentences as part of Literacy!
Fifth and Sixth Class used the School Walkway to link in with Geography.
At each point the children had to draw the flag located on the key card and write down the country associated with each flag. A tricky task no doubt but the boys and girls enjoyed the challenge!

Run Around Ireland Challenge
March 14th - April 8th
From March 14th to April the 8th Scoil Mhuire Magherarney took part in a 4 week Run Around Ireland Challenge. This 4-week challenge encourages schools to build a running break into every day. It’s an excellent way for children to learn about some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks and ideal for bringing learning outdoors. We worked out the distance from our school to each of Ireland's most famous landmarks. Each day, each class took to the track as part of their Active Break and totted up their total distance as a class daily. When a landmark was reached it was marked off the map and the next landmark was set as a goal. The boys and girls really enjoyed the challenge and were amazed by how far they could run as the weeks went by. We also used this opportunity to learn about beautiful places in Ireland we did not know about and hope to visit in the future.
Well done everybody!

Athletics - Cross Country Running 2022
2022 saw the return of the Monaghan Cross Country Competition. Pupils from rang 3-Rang 6 trained at lunch time and a team of 10 represented the school on the day. Everyone ran a super race and it was great to be wearing the school athletics' kit again after missing the event last year.

Active Break Every Day Challenge
For the Month of November our school took on the 'Active Break Everyday Challenge' as part of our work towards our First Active School Flag. Our Active Committee explained the challenge to all classes and shared ideas showing us how we could ensure that we add extra physical activity time to our day at school in order to stay healthy, concentrate and focus while having fun!
Each day each class took part in some extra physical activity challenges which included 'Bizzy Breaks', 'Go Noodle', 'Comic Kids Yoga', 'Sport's Con 10 @ 10', outside playground games and using our Active School Walkway in various ways.
Take a look below at some of our Active Break Everyday Challenges.

To encourage an extra piece of physical activity and to get us all in the Christmas spirit we organised a 'Santa Dash' in December. We used our 'Súilimís le Chéile' / Active Walkway Track and did a Santa Dash wearing our Santa hats and favourite Christmas jumpers. We clapped and cheered our school friends all the way and had great fun!

School Summer GAA League
Our annual school football league was a great success. Well done to Rang 5 & 6 for the excellent organisation and top class refereeing in addition to mentoring and leading the younger members of their teams so ably. Below are the best boy and girl player who not only put on very skillful displays through out the league but also lead and encouraged their teams all the way to the final.

Skipping Workshop
As part of our on-going work on Active Schools we decided to have a workshop based on the skill of skipping. It is something we could all certainly do at playtime but we wanted some inspiration! At the end of the day we all gathered together to see what skipping tricks the different classes had learned.
